Mamadada is a baby photo app for parents to stay organized with millions of photos of their loved ones. Started off from my own needs, this has been my and other two ex-colleagues' Saturday projects.

Challenge

How might we help parents cherish the growing moments of their loved ones at ease?

As a mom of a 1 year old boy, I take tons of baby photos and always feel sorry not doing anything with them. When it comes to the celebration day(e.g. First year birthday), that’s the time when the stress level hits the max - rushing myself to go over millions of photos, judging and selecting good ones, and creating a video / photo album, which takes LONG time and energy. The app is trying to solve the problem of parents like me - how might we help parents capture their baby’s growing moments and stay organized?

Solutions

Register your kids

From my initial research with young parents, photo organization and easy access to the photos they have in minds seem to be the strongest needs. We had many ideas behinds, but we wanted to focus on photo organization as our MVP. Registration is the first step. Parents will be asked to register their baby, and each baby will have the album space.

Pick photos. We will organize for you.

To simply put, this is a folder system with personal touch. You are creating a themed album(folder), leaving your own note to it. Later on, you can share these albums with others and leave comments under each. But our MVP is to create an album space. Photos in the album will be also saved in the cloud for back up purpose.

Manage your account

You can add more family space in your account. Of course can edit other information.

Behind the scene - Design systems

As the service is pretty simple and repetitive in experience (list > detailed album view), one of my main question was how to make this less boring. My strategy was to use set of colors and characters. I defined 6 sets of colors and characters and apply on chronological order to look less repetitive.

What did I learn?

How to define MVP?

Initially, our aim was really high : I wanted to make everything automatic : even without picking the photos, the app will automatically detect babies in the photo gallery and automatically pick up 'best' photos (also learn user's taste on photos) and automatically create photo albums. We were all excited, but soon we look at the reality - this is not what google can do at this moment. I need to be focus on the value we are providing - how much value this feature gives to our user and how much investment we should make? Practicing this way of calculation is the biggest learning I got from this project. And more to come, of course.
